A Square for Biodiversity

Animated film for children on ecology and biodiversity

For the pleasure of young and old, discover the flora and animal species that develop naturally.

Synopsis

A little girl, Chloé, discovers the unsuspected wealth of biodiversity in her garden: flowers, butterflies, but suddenly, a horrible motor monster comes and destroys everything...

Film commentary: A Square for Biodiversity

An adorable little girl in a poetic setting to talk about ecology and environmental protection with your children or students. A very nice educational support.

This short film is a wonderful initiative of the CPIE (Centre d'Etude et de Découverte du Patrimoine) of Périgord-Limousin to allow children to understand the importance of preserving biodiversity. Not just that of the North Pole or the bottom of the oceans, but also that of "ordinary nature", the nature that surrounds us on a daily basis and which conceals a world that is just as spectacular.

The film, which is part of the Un Carré pour la Biodiversité (A Square for Biodiversity) programme, is an operation marked Observatoire Local de la Biodiversité® (Local Biodiversity Observatory) by theNational Union of CPIEs, and invites children to create their own small ecosystem by keeping a grassy area for a whole vegetation season, with no human intervention. This allows young and old alike to discover the flora and animal species that have developed naturally.

The CPIE du Périgord-Limousin is an association created in 1994 with the aim of promoting the natural and cultural heritage of the region, in particular by organising discovery classes and educational activities for schools (nursery, primary, secondary and high schools).

Question the film: A Square for Biodiversity

Understand the story, the theme, express your sensibility and exercise your critical mind.

Ecosystems made up of plant and animal species live in interrelationships in the form of exchanges and dependencies
.Man's activities threaten the fragile balance of ecosystems and biodiversity.

"Biodiversity is not just about the White Bear, the Blue Whale or the Rhinoceros. A large number of plant and animal species surround us in our daily lives, so much so that we no longer pay much attention to them. However, if we take a closer look at this "ordinary nature", we discover a world that is just as spectacular and interesting as the North Pole, the bottom of the ocean or the savannah."

How can we raise awareness of the risks of human intervention?

1Where does the little girl live?
In a house next to a flowering tree.
2At the beginning of the film, where is the little girl resting?
On the branch of the tree.
3Who is resting on the little girl's head?
A white butterfly.
4Who wakes up the little girl?
A spider.
5And when she falls off the branch, what does she find?
Ants.
6Doyou think the little girl likes all these little animals?
Yes, she draws a heart on the back of the ant and plays with the butterflies and bees. She also draws them in her notebook.
7What happens at 1 min 55 sec of the film?
A gardener starts a lawnmower.
8Why is the little girl frightened?
The lawnmower will destroy the environment of the little animals and make them run away.
9The little girl has an idea (light bulb above her head at 3 min 3 sec); What is her idea?
She decides to mark out a piece of garden that must not be touched: she calls it a biodiversity square (do not touch).
10What happens if we do not touch the garden square?
The grass grows back naturally and the small animals come back.
11Do you think this is possible?
Yes, not acting on nature allows an ecosystem and the associated plant and animal species to develop naturally.
Thereis no need for human intervention: no need to plant or bring in insects, nature does it very well on its own.
